LET THEM EAT lop-sided CAKE

During one of our Monday night sail prep sessions I must have mentioned to Severin that the boat is in constant flux, rolling up and down and never still.  I used as an example of this eternal state of commotion the fact that I’ve never seemed to manage to bake a level cake for dessert.

Our first night aboard I baked a cake, let it cool, then frosted it.  When I served the wonky looking (though delicious) cake, Severin gave an unexpected squeal of delight and said, “Hey, it’s a lopsided cake just like you said!” A wide smile spread across his face like a kid on Christmas morning, except this boy had just experienced something far better than that—it was his first real day at sea as a genuine sailor.  He looked appreciatively at the cake in all its uneven splendor and realized what it represented.  He then enthusiastically declared, “I will always love lopsided cake!
