During one of our Monday night sail prep sessions I must have mentioned to Severin that the boat is in constant flux, rolling up and down and never still. I used as an example of this eternal state of commotion the fact that I’ve never seemed to manage to bake a level cake for dessert.
Our first night aboard I baked a cake, let it
cool, then frosted it. When I served the
wonky looking (though delicious) cake, Severin gave an unexpected squeal of delight
and said, “Hey, it’s a lopsided cake just like you said!” A wide smile spread
across his face like a kid on Christmas morning, except this boy had just
experienced something far better than that—it was his first real day at sea as
a genuine sailor. He looked
appreciatively at the cake in all its uneven splendor and realized what it
represented. He then enthusiastically declared,
“I will always love lopsided cake!”

Sometimes it's the simple things. ..
